Recommended Procedures for Mid-Flock PLT Application

PLT can be applied while birds are present in a variety of ways, but care must always be taken to not cause physical injury to the birds or allowing the birds to pile up against migration fences, feeders or in the corners of the house. Having an adequate number of people present to help get the job done quickly is important to minimizing bird stress and injury. Also, extra ventilation is usually needed during mid-flock application to prevent the birds from getting overheated due to their extra movement during PLT application.

Mid-flock PLT application can be performed with manual push spreaders or small hopper spreaders mounted on overhead trolley systems, an ATV or a small tractor. These methods are more labor-intensive and require additional equipment, but can be effective.  If available, the quickest and least labor-intensive method is to have a custom PLT applicator service with large spreader trucks or pull-type spreaders apply PLT in the same manner as they do before chick placement.  If custom application is available, here are some key points to remember when performing mid-flock PLT application:

  1. Migration fences must be temporarily removed when the truck or spreader is operating in the house. This will allow the birds to move away from the equipment as it passes through the house.
  2. In addition to the vehicle driver, it is suggested that two other people be present to help with mid-flock application. As the spreader vehicle moves down the house, one person should put migration fences back in place and one person should monitor the corners of the house to make sure birds do not pile up in the corners.
  3. Mid-flock application is best performed between 2 and 30 days of age. Before 2 days of age, it will be difficult to control the movement of chicks, and after 30 days of age, there may not be enough space in the house for birds to get out of the path of equipment without causing piling.
  4. In warm weather, at least 3 tunnel fans should be locked in the “on” position during the application procedure to ensure adequate ventilation and keep birds cool.
