Promoting Sustainability
in Products and Practices

Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Animal Production

Jones-Hamilton Co. is your partner in sustainability. The principles of Green Chemistry drive our manufacturing processes and the use of our products promote the reduction of natural resource use while lowering emissions.

PLT, LS-PWT2 and ParlorPal are all non-hazardous (safe for people, animals and the environment) and 100% biodegradable.

The environmental chemistry of our earth-friendly products reflects our commitment to your people, your birds and the environment.

Production process generates no waste and uses no solvents

Product degrades after use breaking down into innocuous substances

Production process maximizes atom economy with final product containing all starting materials

Product is biodegradable, non-toxic and ozone friendly

Promoting Sustainable Poultry Production

A lifecycle assessment of PLT – poultry litter treatment and its use in poultry farming showed an enormous environmental benefit in:

  • Ammonia emissions reductions in live production and storage areas
  • VOC emissions reductions due to shifting ecology
  • Greenhouse gas emissions due to decreased fuel usage

The assessment, which compared the environmental impact of the product’s production and distribution process to its impact on greenhouse gas emissions from poultry farms, found every applied ton of PLT reduces CO2 equivalents 20-fold.

The production and distribution of 1 ton of PLT generates about 700 pounds of CO2-equivalent life cycle greenhouse gas emissions. One ton of PLT application reduces life cycle greenhouse gas emissions over a 6-week grow out period by about 16,200 pounds of CO2-equivalent during winter and by about 3,100 pounds of CO2-equivalent during summer/spring through reduced heating fuel and ventilation electricity usage.

1,000 tons of PLT reduces ammonia emissions by 140 total tons annually

Additional Sustainability Benefits of PLT Use

In addition to direct reductions in ammonia emissions, VOC emissions and greenhouse gas emissions, PLT use benefits the environment by:

  • Improving bird performance, thereby decreasing the impact of production
  • Improving feed efficiency, which reduces grain production inputs
  • Increasing fertilizer value of litter
  • Enhancing safety by lowering the number of Class 8 hazardous materials on the road (competitive litter amendments)
