Promoting Sustainable Poultry Production
A lifecycle assessment of PLT – poultry litter treatment and its use in poultry farming showed an enormous environmental benefit in:
- Ammonia emissions reductions in live production and storage areas
- VOC emissions reductions due to shifting ecology
- Greenhouse gas emissions due to decreased fuel usage
The assessment, which compared the environmental impact of the product’s production and distribution process to its impact on greenhouse gas emissions from poultry farms, found every applied ton of PLT reduces CO2 equivalents 20-fold.
The production and distribution of 1 ton of PLT generates about 700 pounds of CO2-equivalent life cycle greenhouse gas emissions. One ton of PLT application reduces life cycle greenhouse gas emissions over a 6-week grow out period by about 16,200 pounds of CO2-equivalent during winter and by about 3,100 pounds of CO2-equivalent during summer/spring through reduced heating fuel and ventilation electricity usage.
